Advanced Microscopy Facility

The Advanced Microscopy Facility (AMF) is the imaging core facility of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre, UCL. We focus on high-throughput, automated, solutions that are customised for the needs of our researchers. We design, build, upgrade, and repair optical systems throughout the SWC. Our tools are designed in the open and used by researchers worldwide.

Platforms & Services

Automated whole-brain imaging

We provide high-throughput whole-brain imaging via our in-house 'BrainSaw' serial section platform and our MesoSPIM lightsheet.

Histology and spatial transcriptomics

We offer a range of histology services, including spatial transcriptomics in thick tissue. This platform is backed up by an automated slide scanner and two confocal microscopes.

In-vivo microscopy technical services

We support over 20 in vivo imaging systems across the Centre, spanning 2-photon, mini 2-photon, 3-photon, single-cell photo-stimulation, DMD and scanner-based optogenetics rigs, and more.
