SWC Advanced Microscopy Facility

About us

The Advanced Microscopy Facility (AMF) is the imaging core facility of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre, UCL. Our whole-brain imaging platform focuses on high-throughput, automated microscopy. This is complemented by our histology and spatial transcriptomics services, which use a combination of thin-section slide-scanning and confocal imaging of thick, cleared, tissue. We offer technical support for in vivo functional imaging, as well as designing, building, and maintaining optical systems throughout the Centre. Our tools are developed in the open and used by researchers worldwide.

Contact

Our contact details are available on the People page. The best way to reach us internally is on Slack, where there are channels for most equipment and topics. Ask for Peter for general microscopy, Jess for histology, Rob for BrainSaw, Isabell for in vivo 2-photon, or Igor for analysis. New users should start with the FAQ.

Location

The Facility is on Level B2 of the SWC, immediately to the left as you come out of the lifts, with a doorbell to the left of the door. You must be laser safety trained to have access.

Funding and support

The AMF is part of the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre, which is supported by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation and Wellcome.
